Project Description

The new Whitney Museum of American Art

Known as the preeminent institution devoted to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of twentieth-century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the Whitney’s new building situated between the High Line and the Hudson River, vastly increases the Museum’s exhibition and programming space.

Mi provided Strategy, Design and Development Services for the new Whitney. The project included dynamic content integrated with the Whitney’s web CMS and integration with the elevator management system.

Mi-Technologies was selected as the manufacturer for the content playback hardware and communications equipment. The Whitney’s digital communications is powered by over 20 DS-series content players, 1 CM-100 content server and data aggregation and is accomplished by our proprietary Fractal Media Engine 2.0.

The Whitney sought out our expertise in product development to develop and manufacture (2) custom 2500NITS, double-sided, 72” LCD blade signs that are mounted in the Largo plaza in front of the museum. The construction of the blades assembly includes the custom fabrication of over 100 steel, stainless, aluminum, glass and polymer parts. When compared to 5,000 NITS LED the Whitney staff chose this option for its superior black rendering capability and sunlight-readable nature.
